Description
1. The Civil War was fought over issues related to slavery. Using original documentary evidence in D2L Reference Links/Avalon Project, explain how the Southern states justified their decision to secede from the Federal Union following the election of President Lincoln in 1860. Give direct citations/quotes.
2. Slavery dominated the economy and politics of the South, but many Southerners did not own slaves. Using statistical evidence from the US Census of 1850-1860:
a) show how slave ownership illustrated the poverty of most Southern whites,
b) show how slave ownership illustrated the economic and social divide between ‘Planters’ and others,
c) show how slavery shortened the ‘life expectancy’ of the slaves themselves.
3) With the Union victory at Antietam, Md. In the summer of 1862, Lincoln was able to issue the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Discuss the three offers he made to the Confederacy to end the bloody conflict and explain the rationale for each.
4) The South refused Lincoln’s offers and so after 100 days, on Jan. 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the definitive Emancipation Proclamation. (See Reference Links/NARA/Emancipation Proclamation/Transcript.) Analysis the document from:
a) its legal standing, what authority did he use?
b) what geographical areas where included and which excluded and why?
c) how did he address the slaves to be freed directly, what did he admonish them to do and not to do?
5) Despite passage of the 14th (1866) and 15th (1868) amendments to the Constitution protecting the Civil Rights of former slaves, The Compromise of 1877 set back these gains. Describe how this occurred.
How did Northern Republicans benefit? How did White Southern Gov’t benefit? How did Blacks suffer?
6) Describe in detail how the Railroads became the driving force of American Industrialization in the second half of the 19th century. Discuss its relationships with other sectors of the economy: a) farming and ranching, b) communications, c) energy and manufacturing. Give examples to illustrate for each.
7) Examine the ways in which wealthy Robber Barons and the corporations they controlled influenced spending (fiscal) policy at the Federal level. A) Discuss the importance of subsidies to railroads in direct payments and in land allocations in the West to the expansion of the economy. B) Describe how ‘lobbying’ to influence votes in Congress was used by the Capitalists to benefit their corporations.
8) Explain how railroads construction across the west and increased farming on the Great Plains impacted the Native Americans living there. What was the result for the Plains Indian tribes who depended on bison for survival?
9) Outline the relative place on the world stage of the United States by the early 20th century just before WWI. How did the US compare to Europe a) economically and b) militarily? Explain why the US did not have a large army but was already building an important navy.
